CHEESE: Scenes

2025.12.13 Saturday 14:00

Location

Goethe-Institut Beijing, 2 Jiuxianqiao Rd, 798 Art District, Chaoyang, Beijing

Speakers: Demone, WENGWENG

As the inaugural screening event of the TECHNO WORLDS exhibition, CHEESE: Scenes presents two documentaries—If I Think of Germany at Night and Break The Wall. Drawing respectively from the contexts of Germany and China, these films reveal how, under the influence of techno culture, the dance floor becomes a sociological testing ground, and how local subcultural archives are constructed and carried forward.

We hope these two films will invite audiences to observe the different paths taken by the techno scenes in China and Germany as they moved from early “chaos” toward a sense of “order.” They also encourage reflection on how dance floors and club spaces transcend politics, class, and geography to become “community vessels” with an inherent capacity for healing.

Following the screenings, we have invited two guests who have played a crucial role in shaping Chinese techno—Demone and Weng Weng. They will share how their work contributed to the early development of Chinese electronic music, and discuss the efforts made by these local pioneers in “breaking the wall” and building cultural archives.
