Commissions

Since its foundation, MACA has dedicated itself to nurturing artists by facilitating the creation of commissioned works through exhibitions or special online programs. Launched in 2021, MACA’s digital commission program, Bare Screen, has showcased video works by artists Tao Hui, Chen Tianzhuo, Liu Qinmin, Liu Chuang, Payne Zhu, Tan Jing and Zheng Ke, Zhang Wenxin, Tang Chao, Hu Wei, Liu Wa, and others. Following the inauguration of our physical venue in 2022, MACA expanded its support, enabling artists from our gallery exhibitions to complete new commissioned works through notable exhibitions such as “The Elephant Escaped”, “Tong Wenmin: From South to North”, “Hu Wei: Touching a Fabric of Holes”, “Yuan Zhongtian: No Door, One Window, Only Light” and “An Atlas of the Difficult World”. Looking ahead, MACA will continue to commission artists, as an important way to give back to the contemporary art ecosystem, helping and supporting artists to create intellectually demanding and challenging works.

MACA Art Center is a non-profit contemporary art institution housed in a standalone building of minimalistic industrial style and futuristic design in Beijing's 798 Art District, a major hub for arts and culture in the city. Through forward-looking and experimental content, MACA aims to enable communication traversing disciplinary boundaries while forging international dialogues grounded in the specificities of a Chinese perspective. Our programmatic scope, which spans exhibitions, research initiatives, pan-performance practices, and alternative communal engagement, signals a commitment to exploring ideas outside established epistemic frameworks. MACA seeks to position itself as a new institutional mode, proposing an alternative coordinate within the topology of Chinese contemporary art. Through art, we address our radically transforming times.
