Conference Room Rave: After Fourier

2026.01.24 Saturday 14:00

Location

Grey Cube, Goethe-Institut China

Guest: hiatus间断平衡

In traditional music, “notes” are often seen as the foundation of melody and harmony. But if we listen more closely, every sound is actually made up of many different frequencies working together. In this sense, sound itself is already a kind of harmony. In the era of computer music, composing is no longer only about writing notes, but also about shaping and transforming sound at the level of frequency. Through the Fourier transform, musicians can translate sound from the time domain into the frequency domain, manipulate its spectral information, and transform it back into sound. This process makes it possible to create sonic textures that depart from the frequency characteristics of traditional instruments—sounds that may feel unfamiliar, yet reveal a structural beauty unique to computer music.

This event specially invites the label 「hiatus间断平衡」 as guest participants, presenting a DJ/VJ live performance grounded in spectral music and computer music, alongside a small workshop introducing the use of spectral effectswithin the free music programming language SuperCollider.

*Participants are welcome to bring their own laptops.

Meeting Room Rave is a time-limited weekly experience taking place in the Goethe-Institut’s Grey Box space. The Grey Box temporarily returns to its original role as a meeting room, and every Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, audiences are invited to bring the underground rhythms of the night into everyday life. With sound and bodies present, perhaps any space can become a dance floor.
