This is an era deeply saturated by technology. As a digital native, the artist Shen Tongzhou has continually paid attention to each new present moment — how people record and watch events. The unease and excitement produced through this lived experience led him to set out from the initial question of "how to see the unseen," beginning an unending interrogation of himself and the digital environment around him. He regards himself entirely as a model to be disassembled — one that can be deeply excavated, analyzed, translated, and made to re-derive the above process once more. This process lets thought seep into digital media, thereby generating a continuous dialogue. Within this game, he searches for the gaps of resistance and self-defined rules, while also experiencing a back-and-forth of advancing one step and retreating two, of retrospection and reflection. In silence, information scatters irregularly yet remains connected, like colonies of bacteria, and the body is gradually dissolved in the process.

At this VORTEX titled "The Rabbit Hole Without Beginning or End," Shen Tongzhou transforms the traces of multi-layered, iterative computation into a perceptible field, constructing a vertical structure as endless and indescribable as a "backroom," one that falls without end. Through multiple media — text, painting, oral narration, computer operation, space, and video — he leads viewers to deduce together that initial question, wandering through time that has diffused into countless fragments.

About the artist:Shen Tongzhou

Artist, currently based between Hangzhou and the internet. As the son of a professional esports player, he grew up surrounded by video games and electronic devices from an early age. For him, any operation on an electronic device — whether a game, a piece of software, or any other digital medium — is a kind of game. He explores the virtual spaces within software, and the way software processes and generates external reality, while setting up conditions to experiment with the interactions between humans, machines, and networks. Working primarily across video, painting, and spatial installation, he creates immersive, absorbing environments that guide viewers to discover the latent factors permeating the world around them.

About the Vortex

VORTEX, launched by the MACA in Shanghai in 2022, is an art and cultural salon in the form of lecture performances occurring once or twice every month. The programme calls for non-institutionalised artistic and academic production in which contemporary art practitioners and scholars get to explore cross-disciplinarily the issues of the macro or micro, the global or local, the collective or individual. VORTEX, hence, is where you spin in the whirlpool of spontaneous whims and intuitive approaches represented by individual research and enquiries. Being present here at VORTEX, you are experiencing versatile forms of lecture performances that experiment with new mechanisms and methodologies.

MACA Art Center is a non-profit contemporary art institution housed in a standalone building of minimalistic industrial style and futuristic design in Beijing's 798 Art District, a major hub for arts and culture in the city. Through forward-looking and experimental content, MACA aims to enable communication traversing disciplinary boundaries while forging international dialogues grounded in the specificities of a Chinese perspective. Our programmatic scope, which spans exhibitions, research initiatives, pan-performance practices, and alternative communal engagement, signals a commitment to exploring ideas outside established epistemic frameworks. MACA seeks to position itself as a new institutional mode, proposing an alternative coordinate within the topology of Chinese contemporary art. Through art, we address our radically transforming times.
